Reactivating a Transatlantic Legacy
A bridge of faith, history, and philanthropy across the Atlantic
Texas and Lyon share a storyworth preserving
The Texas–Lyon Heritage Society is a U.S.-based philanthropic initiative created to advance international fundraising efforts for two priority projects in Lyon: The Social Hub and Hôtel-Dieu, while also supporting the Texas–Lyon Heritage Fellowship, a Texas-facing initiative that builds educational, academic, cultural, and institutional ties between Texas and Lyon.
For nearly two centuries, religious, cultural, and philanthropic ties between Lyon and Texas have connected people across continents. Bishops, sisters, educators, and institutions carried a mission of faith, service, and human dignity from Lyon to Galveston, San Antonio, Houston, and beyond.
Leaders such as Jean-Marie Odin, the first Bishop of Galveston, and religious communities, including the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, helped establish churches, schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions that continue to shape Texas today.
As the 2026–2027 anniversaries approach, this is a rare moment to preserve the story, honor the people and institutions that built it, and invite a new generation into the relationship between Texas and Lyon.
